Rare earth permanent magnet materials are high-performance magnetic materials produced by using rare earth metals such as samarium and neodymium as core raw materials, combined with transition metals like iron and boron to form alloy powders, which are then processed through pressing, sintering, and other techniques. Compared with traditional magnetic materials, their most prominent advantage is the ability to generate an extremely strong magnetic field in the same volume, achieving a leap in magnetic performance. At present, the most widely used and comprehensively best-performing type is the third-generation rare earth permanent magnet material-neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB). With a magnetic energy product far exceeding that of conventional materials, it is hailed as the "King of Magnets." Its magnetic performance can be more than ten times that of traditional ferrite magnets, and an extremely small NdFeB magnet can bear suction forces far exceeding its own weight-a truly remarkable advantage.

Owing to these unique material characteristics, rare earth permanent magnets have become a strategically important new material in China and a core competitive arena in the global high-end manufacturing industry. Their irreplaceable strategic value is mainly reflected in three aspects. First, they offer extremely high energy conversion efficiency: when used in motor equipment, they minimize electrical energy loss and reduce equipment heating, significantly improving the operating efficiency of electromechanical systems. Second, they provide outstanding lightweighting and miniaturization advantages: while ensuring the same power output, motors equipped with NdFeB permanent magnets are only about one-third the size of conventional motors, perfectly matching the development needs of high-end equipment for lightweight and integrated designs. Third, their application is irreplaceable: in core areas such as new energy vehicle drive motors, large-scale wind power equipment, and high-end industrial servo motors, there is currently no alternative technology with comparable cost-effectiveness and performance that can fully replace them, making them a critical foundational material supporting the development of advanced manufacturing.

Applications of Rare Earth Permanent Magnets in Automobiles: Beyond the Core Drive

It is commonly believed that rare earth permanent magnets are used only in new energy vehicle (NEV) drive motors, but in fact, they have already extensively penetrated various core and auxiliary components throughout modern automobiles-both traditional internal combustion engine vehicles and NEVs rely heavily on them, with application scenarios covering the entire vehicle, including powertrain, handling, and intelligent control.

The drive motor is the most core and critical application scenario for rare earth permanent magnets in the automotive field. Currently, Tesla's long-range models, BYD's entire NEV lineup, and mainstream NEV brands such as NIO, Li Auto, and XPeng all use NdFeB permanent magnet synchronous motors as their core power units. Compared with earlier AC induction motors and switched reluctance motors, permanent magnet synchronous motors combine multiple advantages-high efficiency, energy savings, low vibration and noise, and high power density-with comprehensively superior performance. Especially as 800V high-voltage vehicle platforms are gradually being adopted, continuously upgraded high-temperature-resistant and highly stable NdFeB magnets can support long-term stable operation under high-speed, high-power, and high-temperature conditions, preventing demagnetization failures and providing a crucial guarantee for the implementation of efficient electric drive systems in NEVs.

Beyond the core powertrain, the vast number of onboard micro-motors represent an important and stable application base for rare earth permanent magnets. A mid-to-high-end fuel vehicle carries 40 to 100 micro-motors, and the number in NEVs is even higher. These micro-motors are widely used in various refined functional scenarios across the vehicle. Among them, core control components such as electric power steering systems and electronic parking brake systems rely on permanent magnet motors to achieve rapid response and stable torque output, ensuring driving safety and control precision. Meanwhile, comfort functions such as air conditioning damper adjustment, electric seat adjustment, window and sunroof operation, and wiper movement also depend on small NdFeB permanent magnet motors for stable operation. Although each such motor consumes only a small amount of magnetic material, their high penetration rate and huge numbers constitute a stable and rigid demand for rare earth permanent magnets in the automotive sector.

At the same time, rare earth permanent magnets are also an important cornerstone of automotive precision control systems. In key electronic control components such as anti-lock braking systems, electronic stability control systems, automatic transmission shift mechanisms, and variable valve timing systems, high-performance NdFeB magnets provide stable and precise magnetic fields, ensuring rapid response and accurate operation of various sensors and electromagnetic actuators. They deliver reliable technical support for braking safety, power regulation, and operating condition adaptation, making them an indispensable core material for intelligent and precision control in vehicles.

Current Development Status: Soaring Demand and Accelerating Capacity Expansion Competition

Driven by the rapid iteration of the new energy industry and the industrialization of emerging intelligent equipment, market demand for rare earth permanent magnet materials continues to surge. The industry is advancing simultaneously in capacity expansion, technological upgrading, and global supply chain competition, entering a phase of rapid growth. Among the drivers, the NEV industry is the core engine propelling demand growth for rare earth permanent magnets. In 2025, global NEV sales exceeded 20 million units, with a market penetration rate approaching 25%. According to industry estimates, a battery electric vehicle consumes an average of 2 to 3 kilograms of NdFeB blanks for its drive motor and various micro-motors, while hybrid vehicles use about 60% of that amount. The NEV sector alone drives an annual demand of 50,000 to 60,000 tonnes of NdFeB materials. Based on industry forecasts, global NEV sales are expected to exceed 40 million units by 2030, at which point NdFeB demand in this sector will surpass 100,000 tonnes, indicating enormous growth potential.

In addition to NEVs, the rapid industrialization of humanoid robots has opened up a completely new second growth curve for rare earth permanent magnets. Since 2025, the commercial deployment of humanoid robots has accelerated noticeably. A single humanoid robot requires about 40 high-precision joint motors, and each joint motor relies on high-performance NdFeB magnets. With mass-production plans from leading companies such as Tesla Optimus, Unitree, and Figure AI gradually being implemented, humanoid robots will create a multi-billion-yuan incremental market for rare earth permanent magnets, further expanding the industry's long-term development space.

From the perspective of global supply, China firmly holds a dominant position in the rare earth permanent magnet industry, accounting for over 90% of global production, with its production capacity and technological level ranking among the top worldwide. For example, JL Mag's Baotou base has successfully put its first and second phases totaling 20,000 tonnes of capacity into operation, with production continuing to be released in phases. The company's total capacity is expected to reach 60,000 tonnes per year by the end of 2027, consistently matching incremental global market demand. At the same time, overseas markets are accelerating the build-up of their own supply chains, with the United States and Europe launching projects for magnet manufacturing plants and rare earth recycling in an attempt to break supply chain dependency. However, in the short term, China's comprehensive advantages in supply chain integrity, production costs, and core technologies remain difficult to challenge.

Riding the Wave: Rare Earth Permanent Magnets Enter a New Industry Cycle

From the product application perspective, rare earth permanent magnets have already been fully integrated into automobiles, deeply embedded in the entire value chain-from powertrain to handling to intelligent control-serving as a core mobile carrier for modern NEVs and even all modern automobiles, and providing key support for efficient, stable, and intelligent vehicle operation. From the industry development perspective, driven by the continued volume growth of NEVs and the incremental boost from humanoid robots, the rare earth permanent magnet industry has officially entered a new upward cycle. Domestic leading enterprises are releasing capacity in a concentrated manner, and the sector's growth and investment value are becoming increasingly prominent. From the industry trend perspective, the global transition to electrification of energy is an unstoppable megatrend. As a foundational material for efficient electric energy conversion, rare earth permanent magnets are not only suitable for the automotive industry but will also be widely applied across various types of high-end electrified equipment-automotive applications are just the first major scenario for large-scale deployment.
