Applications of Slip Casting Ceramics

High-Temperature Metallurgy
Alumina ceramic crucibles are commonly used in the metallurgy industry for high-temperature melting processes, particularly for melting metals and alloys. With a melting point up to 1750°C, alumina crucibles remain stable in high-temperature environments and do not react chemically with molten metals, making them especially suitable for melting platinum, gold, silver, copper, and other precious metals.

Laboratory Chemical Analysis
In laboratories, alumina ceramic crucibles are used for high-temperature chemical analysis and experiments, particularly in processes involving high-temperature calcination or material synthesis. Due to their excellent resistance to acid and alkali corrosion and good chemical inertness, alumina crucibles can withstand various chemical reagents without affecting the accuracy of experimental results.

Material Research
In the field of materials science, research often involves high-temperature synthesis and sintering experiments. Alumina ceramic crucibles can endure extreme temperatures and provide a stable thermal environment during these processes. They are widely used in the preparation of ceramics, glass, powder metallurgy, and other new materials, helping researchers develop and optimize the performance of various new materials.

Analytical and Heat Treatment Equipment
Alumina ceramic crucibles are widely used in heat treatment and thermal analysis equipment, such as Thermogravimetric Analyzers (TGA) and Differential Scanning Calorimeters (DSC). In these devices, crucibles need to withstand high temperatures while maintaining structural integrity and chemical inertness, making alumina crucibles an ideal choice.

Process Flow of Slip Casting Ceramics

Preparation of the Slip

The first step in slip casting is preparing the slip, a homogenous mixture of alumina powder, water, and various additives. The slip’s viscosity and rheology must be carefully controlled to ensure optimal casting.

Mold Preparation

Molds for alumina ceramic tubes are typically made from plaster or other porous materials. They must be meticulously cleaned and dried to ensure a smooth, defect-free casting.

Pouring the Slip

The prepared slip is poured into the mold, filling it completely. The mold’s porosity draws out the liquid, leaving a solid layer of ceramic material on its walls.

Casting Time

The casting time depends on the desired wall thickness of the tube. This process requires careful monitoring to achieve uniform thickness and avoid defects.

Demolding and Drying

Once the desired thickness is reached, the excess slip is poured out, and the mold is left to dry. After sufficient drying, the solidified tube is carefully removed from the mold.

Firing Process

The dried tube undergoes a firing process in a kiln at high temperatures. This step sinters the ceramic particles, enhancing the tube’s strength and stability.

FAQ

Q: Is alumina crucible better than zirconia?

A: One critical factor to consider when choosing between alumina and zirconia crucibles is their chemical inertness. Alumina is generally more inert than zirconia, making it an excellent choice when dealing with corrosive substances.

Q: What is the cooling rate for alumina crucible?

A: Heating rate of 150-300°C per hour is recommended for the first 1-1.5 hours to reduce the impact of thermal shock. Lower the temperature as gradually as possible. Cooling down rate is often half of the heating rate (75-150°C per hour).

Q: What is the difference between alumina and platinum crucibles?

A: Platinum crucibles offer exceptional thermal stability and chemical resistance, making them ideal for high-temperature applications. On the other hand, Alumina crucibles provide good thermal stability, chemical inertness, and affordability, catering to a wide range of applications.

Q: What is the heating rate for alumina crucible?

A: Large alumina crucibles need to be preheated to avoid cracking due to the sudden change in temperature. Placing an alumina substrate under the crucible can also reduce the risk. A heating rate of 150°C/ hr is recommended for even heating.

Q: How to clean an alumina crucible?

A: For cleaning very heavily contaminated alumina crucibles, the following process has proven itself: soak the crucibles for at least 24 hours in aqua regia (3 parts concentrated hydrochloric acid and 1 part concentrated nitric acid) and boil for 3 hours in this solution (aqua regia dissolution).
