From 4N To 6N: Progress in Domestic Substitution Of High Purity Alumina

Apr 02, 2026 Leave a message

High Purity Alumina (HPA) refers to alumina powder materials with a purity of 99.99% or higher. Owing to its excellent optical, electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties, HPA has become a critical foundational material supporting the development of modern high-tech industries. From LED lighting and lithium battery separators to semiconductor wafers and high-end optical components, different purity grades of HPA play an irreplaceable role. In recent years, driven by the rapid growth of China's new energy, semiconductor, and optoelectronics industries, the localization of HPA has attracted significant attention.

4N Grade: Market Mainstay, Mature Domestic Production

4N grade HPA is the mainstream product in the global market, accounting for approximately 60% of the market share. China has established a complete industrial chain in this segment, with ample production capacity and intense market competition. Driven by the explosive growth of new energy vehicles and energy storage industries, demand for 4N grade products in the field of lithium battery separator coatings continues to rise. 4N grade products have largely achieved domestic substitution, with domestic enterprises possessing large-scale production capabilities; some companies are even experiencing overcapacity. However, in high-end applications, there is still room for improvement in product consistency and stability.

5N Grade: Critical Period for Domestic Substitution

5N grade (99.999%) high purity alumina is a key raw material for semiconductor packaging substrates, LED substrates, and high-end display panels. China's dependence on Japan for high-end semiconductor-grade 5N products is approximately 85%, with about 80% of the high-end market controlled by overseas companies. Japan's Sumitomo Chemical (global market share ~40%) and Germany's Sasol (~25%) form the dominant competitive landscape. Therefore, promoting import substitution of 5N HPA to meet domestic market demand has become an inevitable trend in the industry's development.
